On a serious whitelist server like Forsaken RP, your character backstory is your first impression. It tells staff whether you understand what roleplay actually is — or whether you're going to log in, grab a gun, and ruin someone else's experience.
A good backstory doesn't need to be long. It needs to be believable.
Your character doesn't have to be from Los Santos. In fact, arriving from somewhere else often makes for a more interesting story. Give them a hometown, a reason to leave, and a reason Los Santos specifically.
Bad: "He grew up in Los Santos and wants to be rich."
Good: "Raised in Cape Town by a single mother, Marcus left South Africa at 22 after his younger brother was killed in a gang conflict he narrowly escaped. He arrived in Los Santos with R4,000 in savings and a contact number scrawled on a napkin."
This is the engine of your character. It should be specific and human — not "power" or "money" in the abstract.
Bad: "He wants to become the most powerful person in the city."
Good: "He wants enough stability to send money home to his mother every month and never feel powerless again."
Characters without flaws are boring and usually a sign of a player who wants to win rather than roleplay. Give them a real weakness — trust issues, a temper, a bad habit, a debt.
How do they end up in the situations that create stories? Are they desperate for work? Do they owe someone? Are they running from something?
Aim for 200–400 words. Shorter than that and staff can't evaluate it. Longer than that and you're padding. If your backstory genuinely needs more space, use a Google Doc with public link access.
Jayden Cole, 26, grew up in Durban in a household that moved between stability and chaos depending on his father's gambling. He never finished school but taught himself to fix cars in a neighbour's garage. After a loan shark came for his father's debt, Jayden left with nothing and found his way to Los Santos on a promise of work from a distant cousin he'd never met. The cousin was gone. The city wasn't.
That's 72 words. It establishes origin, motivation, flaw, and hook. It leaves room for story. That's what good backstory looks like.
